Mousehunt (1997): A Hilarious Cat-and-Mouse Game

Mousehunt directed by Gore Verbinski in 1997 is a sunny comedy which deserves attention and is rather amusing. The main characters are two terribly unhappy brothers, Ernie and Lars Smuntz played by the famous actor Nathan Lane and Lee Evans, respectively. These two, though, are rather different, seek to transform their deceased father’s worn-out string mill into a far more profitable business.

There we have it in black and white; it does not sound very complicated, does it? Not exactly, though.

The leading role of the movie is taken by a persevering and sly mouse. This little mouse is not just any transforming mouse that only eats cheese. It looks like MacGyver’s mouse form, which is always one step ahead of naive brothers. Depending on the endeavors of Ernie and Lars attempting to free themselves of the nuisance of a mouse, the duo falls into so many comical and catastrophic situations. This is like Home Alone only with a mouse and not Kevin McCallister or any kid for that matter.

One of the most amusing scenes in the movie are when Lars and Ernie introduce heavier and heavier traps that do not work as planned. They even got a crazy exterminator who also joining the craziness of the whole plot, portrayed by Christopher Walken.

”Mousehunt” captivates viewers with the funny scenes and pleasant acting of Lane and Evans. Nothing can go wrong when they are perfectly on cue to make every incident and mistake look ridiculous. The preparations made by the brothers go up in smoke and the slapstick elements are more or less reminiscent of the plane from one of the old Looney Tunnes cartoons. You really can almost not help but laugh.

Therefore, it is easy to deduce that “Mousehunt” is a cute picture interlinking both comedy and tender sentiments sections. This reiteration is important to understand that the main troubles and fun can emerge from the least expected events. Thus, if you want a good flick, a comedy film, and do not want to look into something overly profound and sentimental, “Mousehunt” is a perfect choice. Just expect to get instantly in love with mice and probably reconsider the good old mousetrap idea.
